Is silica sand usable for photovoltaic cells solar cells in scarce supply?

It is not in scarce supply, but because it is a natural resource that must regenerate itself over time, scientists are highly interested in technology known as “thin-film” PV cells, which are only coated in silicon or use other alternative materials.  This is due to the shortage and high manufacturing cost of silicon.
