Should we be worried if the pine beetle goes extinct?

The loss of any species has unknown consequences. See extensive discussions here of mosquitoes, rhinos, and other species. (Do a search) Humans would probably typically say that exterminating the mosquito (or the pine beetle, or many other animals perceived to be detrimental to human preferences) would be a “good” thing.

I would say be careful what you wish for. The consequences of such drastic events are absolutely unpredictable in detail, and the ramifications may not manifest for decades or centuries.
