Should my compost pile get direct sunlight?

It is important for a compost pile to be warm, which sunlight helps with. However, compost piles often achieve warmth by themselves, and sunlight can dry a pile out. It is extremely important for your pile to be moist. Many people put their piles near shade so that the pile can still get some outside warmth, but isn’t sitting out in the open and drying out.

For fast composting it is recommended that the pile stays in full sun. The sunlight keeps the pile heated up and things will quickly decompose.
