Should I shave my dog during the summer so he doesn’t get too hot?

When I worked as a dog groomer, we were careful to warn people who own certain breeds of dogs against shaving them. If your dog has a glossy coat, that glossiness will not come back after it has been shaved so that is something to think about before you grab the buzzers. After glossy coated dogs are shaved, the hair grows back coarser and lacks the original sheen. As the above answers suggest, shaving your dog helps to keep him/her cool because the hair insulates your pet but if you don’t want to lose the beautiful quality of your dog’s hair, you can keep him/her cool by brushing out the loose hairs, providing ice cubes, limiting exercise time, or letting them lay in a pool of water.
