Should I remove the top from jars I put in the recycling bin?

I ask because if I take the top off an old jar of tomato sauce, then I must rinse out the jar thoroughly to prevent it from molding in my recycling bin in my kitchen. But if I can keep the top on, then I don’t have to worry about rinsing it out and wasting water. Any ideas on what is the right thing to do here?

Not neccesarily.  They may simply need to be recyycled separately dependent upon what they are made of.  Most glass jars have lids made of steel which is definitely recyclable.  The best bet is to wash both the jars and the lids and to separate them.
