Yes, fishermen should be highly concerned with coming in contact with lead weights. Lead is a health hazard to humans and even low amounts of lead poisoning can cause IQ reduction, learning disabilities, ADD, reduced growth, kidney damage, and hearing impairment. Increased lead poisoning can result in mental retardation, coma, high blood pressure, infertility, nerve disorders, muscle and joint pain, irritability, concentration problems, and even death (Get the Lead Out of Fishing, 2010). Several campaigns have been started to discontinue the use of lead weights among fishermen.
