Should conservation efforts focus on uniqueness or high diversity?

I would argue that conservation efforts should focus on ecosystem function. When I hear uniqueness, I imagine conservation funds going into protecting dwindling populations that have no chance of recovering. That would be a waste of time and effort. What we should do is conserve the ecosystem’s ability to continue functioning by protecting crucial interactions and relationships from things like human expansion and impact. High diversity will be a part of that perspective because diversity is important for being adaptive.
