It would help but I don’t know if it’s something retailers would agree to. It would certainly be something that more sustainable goods would be willing to get on board with to show how good their products are. In some cities, fast food restaurants have started to put their calorie content on the menus (all restaurants for that matter) so I suppose anything is possible. A metric would have to be designed to be able to be used uniformly across many industries as well as be easily understood by consumers.
