Is sediment washed up or out with waves?

Waves both deposit and wash away sediment. Which happens more strongly depends on the currents in a specific area. Along 86% of US coastline, beaches are eroding, which implies that in most places, the force pulling sand away from the beach is stronger. However, the littoral current, which runs parallel to the beach, redeposits the sand in other places.
