In 2011, Japan announced that it would suspend its annual whale hunt, which signalled the pressure the country is feeling from the conservation action groups such as the Sea Shepherd are taking against whaling on top of the declining demand for whale meat from consumers. it is not known if this suspension was a sign of the end of whaling for Japan in the long term, only time will tell. The media in Japan reported that the suspension of the hunt was due to a fear for the safety of the whale hunt shipping crews when facing off with groups such as the Sea Shepherd. The Sea Shepherd claimed that since December 2010, they have had great success in preventing whales from being killed by whalers compared to previous years.
