Sea salt is produced on open salt flats on the coast. Water is allowed in to the flats and then trapped by small damns. The water is then left to evaporate in the sea sun. All in all this is a thoroughly natural process. Conversely mineral salt is quite intrusively mined from salt deposits underground.
