    Both are about the same size, but Ireland is slightly larger. Scotland is 31,510 sq. miles in area, about 274 miles long from North to South, and varies in width between 24 and 154 miles. Scotland also includes 787 islands, but only 62 are greater than three square miles in area. Ireland is 32,544 square miles, its greatest length is 302 miles, its greatest width is 189 miles, and its coastline is over 3,500 miles. Ireland also has about 800 lakes and rivers.
