is a savanna the same thing as the plains in America?

Not exactly. A savanna, though mostly grass land, is hot, often borders a rainforest, and has very contrasting wet and dry seasons. A plain, on the other hand, has more to do with elevation: it is an expanse of land that is mainly flat. It can be grassland or forested.
