In most places, coal is the cheapest, followed by natural gas, both of which are fossil fuels. They are abundant and we have many, many plants to process them in. There is hope that in the future, renewable sources like wind and solar will become cheaper than coal, as the technology and transmission for these energy sources gets better. If renewable energy WAS currently cheaper, there would be much more of a movement to expand it to meet all of our energy needs. As it stands, incentives must be given for most people to want renewable energy. This is, hopefully, where legislation will step in.
