Depending on when they were made and how they are being taken care of, absolutely. The refrigerants used in older models have been found to be toxic and bad for the environment, hence the difficulty surrounding disposal. That being said, the newer the model, often times the more energy efficient and easy on the environment. Current models that have been energy star certified have been seen to outperform models even from as recent as 2001 by 40% in terms of energy consumption. Also, taking the time, and possibly the money, to dispose of your refrigerator through various recycling services greatly reduces the refrigerator’s environmental impact.
