The chart below, The Lifecycle Diagram, was pulled from the Toronto Transit Commission and is a helpful illustration of the material processes of production. Materials are extracted from recycling/reuse or otherwise, produced into goods, then after their use are either thrown out, burned up, or put through the system again. It demonstrates in a simple way the productive capacity of reusing and recycling materials, and the unused resources that are leftover when failing to do so. As far as an example, paper is a good one. Used paper is reprocessed into entirely new paper products when recycled, but otherwise is sealed up in landfills.
