Yaks are poached because they have valuable meat, hides, and coats. The meat will obviously feed a lot of people and their hides and coats are used to make capes, hats, boots, shoes, blankets, and other items. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has listed them as a vulnerable species because of the threat of poaching. However, poaching has decreased, as it was once listed as an endangered species.
