Is reaching zero waste on a large scale possible?

Realistically this is unthinkable with current technology. The amount of CO2 produced as waste by engine exhaust alone is so astronomical that it is in its own category. When added to the waste produced by industry in the forms of chemicals, heat exchange, and things like disposed packing materials it becomes even harder to achieve zero waste. Excess waste is an unfortunate symptom of consumerism, a way of thinking that is becoming more and more popular. There is also consumer and commercial waste in the form of (again) packaging and transportation.
