Is a rainbow an optical illusion?

No more than light is an optical illusion.  Rainbows are caused by beams of light passing through water droplets (hence the “rain” in rainbow).  As the light enters the droplet it is reflected at a multitude of angles by the mirroring effect of the water, thus creating a “prism effect” which makes visible the individual colors of the spectrum.
