Is the production of silicone bad for the environment?

Silicone is a generic term for polymers constructed from an amalgam of silicon and oxygen. Studies show that silicone by itself has no adverse effects on aerobic or anaerobic bacteria; that it is low in chemical and toxic reactivity; and that it is a water repellant, and as such has no effect on water treatment. Also, they are shown to be biodegradable, as a result of natural chemical processes.
