The link attached is to a study on whether the dollar coin or paper dollar is better for the environment. If one were to read through the entire paper, there is a section called manufacturing where they conclude that producing both the coin and the paper dollar produces waste and is bad for the environment, but neither is more than the other, and data is not released by the government in order to verify this. Interesting enough, the conclusion might shed some indirect light on your question such that it concluded that the dollar coin was better environmentally. This was because the dollar coin can be reminted and reused, whereas 90% of the paper coin is left in a landfill.
