Is the production of linoleum worse for the environment than wood flooring?

It is actually the other way around.  Linoleum is an environmentally friendly building material as it is biodegradable and made from natural materials.  Wood is much more harmful to the environment because of the fact that so many forests are torn down in order to make wood flooring.

Linoleum was originally made from linseed oil plus various extenders and fillers, including limestone, wood, clays, and other things. Today much linoleum is actually polyvinyl chloride, made from natural gas and salt.
