    1(0.8) 1(0.6) 2(0.48)

The contractor will have an 80% chance of getting an electrical job,a 60% chance of getting a plumbing job,and a 48% chance of getting both.

    0.8+0.6 = 1.4 = 140%

The contractor has a 140% chance of getting at least one job.

The probablility that he will get both must be subtracted from the total percentage because the probablility that he will get both is included in the probability that he will get one or the other. Since the probablility that he will get both at the same time is 0.48, we subtract that away from the 1.4 that cox01 calculated. This means that the answer is only 0.92, or 92%.

Or look at it this way…

The probability that he will get an electrical job without getting a plubing job is 0.8-0.48 = 0.32

The probability that he will get a plumbling job without getting an electrical job is 0.6-0.48 =  0.12

Now we can add everything together: 0.32+0.12+0.48= 0.92
