In short, no. Though existing nuclear power plants produce energy at a competitive rate, capacity currently provides only about 20% of electricity in the US. To provide enough energy for the entire nation, capacity would have to be greatly expanded. Constructing new nuclear power plants is formidably expensive, and we don’t really have the funding or the political will to expand capacity right now. Once the plants are up and running, the costs are low, but overcoming the initial hurdles is impossible.
