The link below shows a recipe that can be made at home to ensure that your play dough is non-toxic, although the play dough packaging should say that it is non-toxic as well. I would err on the safe side and make your own, just in case.
Play-Doh was originally made as a wallpaper cleaner but because of its non-toxicity and lack of mess it was introduced as a modeling clay substitute. While it is stated that the Play-Doh has always been non-toxic, there are likely stronger safety regulations now than when it was first invented.
