According to the IUCN Red List of Threaten Species, the platypus is “listed as Least Concern in view of its wide distribution, presumed large population, and because it is unlikely to be declining at nearly the rate required to qualify for listing in a threatened category.” The species used to be threatened in the mid 1900s when it was being killed for its fur. However, now it is protected by law and its population is at a healthy level.
