The vast majority of tupperware are safe for food storage. There are some harmful chemicals in plastic food containers, but only a small percentage of tupperware are made with these. The safest plastics are high-density polyethylene (HDPE or #2), low-density polyethylene (LDPE or #4) and polypropylene (PP or #5), and most tupperwares are made out of PP or LDPE. However, consumers should be aware of some tupperwares that are made with polycarbonate (#7) which contains a chemical called BPA which is harmful and hormone disrupting. Also, plastic containers with plastic #1 (soda bottles) are safe to use once, but repeated use can have negative side effects.
