Poorer countries and communities don’t use plastic as much as wealthier ones, but they are the most effected by it. In fact, wealthier countries are going so far as to export their waste to poorer nations like China, Indonesia, and Africa. Rotterdam is the busiest European ports and two years ago it was also found to be exporting pounds of electronic waste as well as plastics. Because poor nations don’t have the advantages of recycling centers, the waste dumped there accumulates. Some countries in Africa are raising the taxes on plastic bags in hopes to eliminate their usage. The US and Canada export about 100 containers per day to China.
