Is the plastic cutlery made of corn based ethanol more expensive?

Yes, definitely. My school made the switch to corn-based cutlery last year, and they had to mark up food being sold quite a bit to cover the cost. The cost of corn-plastic resin vs petroleum-based resin is between 15-20% more. It’s interesting to consider if you think about the “whole cost” of the cutlery. The corn-plastic forks are often made from genetically-modified corn, processed in a foreign country, etc. The footprint of corn-based cutlery is nearly on-par with petroleum plastics…you’re better off just keeping a fork-knife-spoon set with you!
