The Toyota Prius has something similar to this on its current 2010 model—Eco-Mode lets the driver stay in electric mode under a certain speed and tells the driver what mileage he is getting according to how hard he is pressing the pedal, and how quickly (it has taught me not to take off so quickly when the light change to green!).
