The United States is currently the leading producer of waste going to landfills in the world. The average American produces 1,609 pounds of waste each year. Although Americans compose only 5% of the world’s population, they produce roughly 40% of the world’s waste. Americans recycle about 28% of their waste. Austria, in contrast, recycles 60% of it’s waste, and Greece only 10%. According to a OECD Environmental Data Compendium finding, the countries rank in order of most waste produced by country by year as follows:
1. United States
8. Austria, United Kingdom, and Ireland
The list goes on, but the pattern shows that industrialized nations produce more waste than others.
