The Guard Alaska brand pepper spray is said be prepared without flammable substances which can deplete the ozone layer.

The worst thing in commercial pepper spray is the added chemicals for the propellant.  For the spray to come on of the aerosol canister, a propellant is added that is usually made from nitrogen or carbon dioxide.  These are flammable substances and may cause the canister to explode in intense heat.

The website below details a way to make your own pepper spray at home, assuring it to be environmentally safe.  The simple ingredients are baby oil, cayenne pepper, and rubbing alcohol.
