As far as their business side of the company, they are known for being one the best companies to work for. Fortune wrote an article about their “green business model” and credits them as a top 500 company. Ethisphere named them the most Environmentally Friendly company in 2009 and the most Ethical company in 2010.
Most outdoor companies promote their green techniques because their target audience is typically full of environmentally conscious people. Patagonia, in particular, claims that they “evaluate raw materials, invest in innovative technologies, rigorously police our waste and use a portion of (their) sales to support groups working to make a real difference”. I know from experience that Patagonia offers shoes and other clothing made out of 100% recycled material. Although because Patagonia offers a full rebate for the lifetime of the owner of their products, I must assume that they are more concerned with the quality of their products than their effect on the environment.
