It is a fairly similar idea, but with different stipulations. LEED has various levels of certification depending on energy use and types of energy used. Passivhaus is the idea of having a home that maintains comfortable interior temperatures without the use of active heating and cooling systems (passivhaus= passive house). This is often completely covered by alternative energy sources. Passivhaus takes advantage of insulation, placement of the house, energy efficient windows, and passive systems of heating and cooling air that often use the natural temperatures of your environment to create energy on their own as well as solar and wind energy. A Passivhaus certified home uses significantly less energy than a conventional home and would most likely meet some of LEED’s strictest certifications.
