Water evaporation rates are highest in dry, hot areas like Palm Springs. If a fountain is in the sun, it evaporates more quickly than one that is in the shade. To figure out how much water evaporates each day, take the yearly evaporation rate and divide by 365. I couldn’t find an evaporation rate for Palm Springs but the Salton Sea, which is 40 miles away, evaporates at a rate of six feet a year.
