The depletion of the Ozone Layer was caused by the massive amounts of Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used by industrialized nations. CFC’s were banned in 1996 and the levels of chlorine have now begun to fall, but it is expected that it’ll be 50 more years before chlorine levels return to normal.
No, the ozone layer is not receiving any more damage from human interaction, like emitting CFCs. Because of this, it is expected that the ozone layer will bounce back to the 1950 levels by 2080.
However, naturally the ozone ‘hole’ gets larger every spring, then thickens every winter due to the chemical reaction between ozone and free chlorine. So natural shifts do occur and have been recorded since the 1970s.
