oxo bio degradation
Oxo-biodegradable is a term used to describe plastics that have TDPA (Totally Degradable Plastic Additives), manufactured by the Environmental Products Inc. (EPI), in them. The additives can be mixed with traditional plastic resins to help products degrade in the earth. According to the EPI, the landfill environment contains the proper amount of oxygen to allow complete biodegradation to occur. However, scientific investigations on the EPI’s additives conducted by the Biodegradable Products Institute found that the degradation time of oxo-biodegradable plastics can be slowed or stopped by humidity and continually cool temperatures. Additionally, these plastics have been found to contain too-high levels of the heavy metal cobalt. This new technology is still developing in order to address issues such as these.
