One thing the federal government did to encourage biking was to grant $3 million to Boston’s bike sharing program this year. These funds are to help the city purchase 500 bicycles and set up 50 rental stations. There are also several congressional bills being negotiated that could support a stronger role for bike transport. There’s the transportation bill from the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, which should eventually include a section on bike infrastructure, the Oil Independence Act, whereby state and local governments must reduce emissions (perhaps by increasing bike transport), and the Complete Streets Act for safer biking. These bills were being worked on in July, so the best thing to do to increase bike use is to join groups, call your local officials, and show your support for these measures.
