Another good example of an international treaty designed to help the environment is the Montreal Protocol, which was passed in 1987 and amended in the early ’90s. The Montreal Protocol limits emissions of CFCs, and other compounds that harm the ozone layer. The treaty has been very successful in reducing harm to the ozone layer, and is a great example of how countries have come together to solve environmental problems. As world leaders prepare to build on the Kyoto Protocol and come up with new ways to combat global warming on an international level, they could learn some important lessons from looking at the success of the Montreal treaty.
