The worst industry for the rainforest is probably the emerging biofuel industry. Much of the biodiesel used around the world is produced from oil palm oil. However, the harvesting of this tree requires the clearing of vast areas in the rainforest. In Indonesia, one of the main biodiesel plantations plans to clear-cut up to 50,000 acres of rainforest, destroying numerous ecosystems and the habitats of hundreds if not thousands of animals and people.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of these figures. Biodiesel is believed to be one of the greatest inventions because it releases much less CO2 than traditional diesel. However, we need to consider the environmental cost of production as well.
