Is it illegal to kill an osprey in Florida?
The Osprey (also known as the Fish Hawk) is no longer on the Endangered Species List. However, it is still classified as a Threatened Species. With their populations in decline due to habitat loss and DDT exposure, they have since recovered and were removed from the Endangered Species List in 1989.
Osprey numbers declined in the mid-20th century due to DDT, but since the pesticide’s ban they have made a recovery. The IUCN Red List says they are a species of least concern.
As for killing them in Florida, it’s not legal. Ospreys are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and killing them brings a fine of $500 or 60 days in jail.
