Palynology is the term used for pollen analysis. It is a useful tool for archaeologists to better understand the vegetation in an area in history. Fossil pollen is can be gathered as useful data from stratified layers in mud samples. The lower the layer is, the older the pollen is. There isn’t a minimum number of pollen particles needed for analysis. A low number is simply an indication of lesser vegetation in the history of a sample site.
