Is the Olm an endangered species?

Yes, the olm is on the worldwide endangered species list. One of the reasons is that it is affected by water pollution flowing down towards its caves. Once safe in the caves of Slovenia and Croatia, olm populations are declining due to chemical pollutants. In France, a laboratory has been built to look like an olm cave and now hosts about 400 olms. While the olms can live past 100, the lab found that the average age is about 69 years.
