Yes, obesity is rising in Europe, especially in children. Sources cite that nearly half the population is overweight, with 10-20% in the obese range.
Although 68% of Americans are considered overweight or obese, Europeans are unfortunately quickly catching up. As jaytee said, more than half of adults in Europe are considered overweight or obese and over the past 20 years these rates have more than doubled! Also, new reports state that 1 in 7 children in Europe are now to be considered overweight or obese and experts believe that that this trend will likely continue and increase.
The fat is not distributed equally though. Fewer than 10% of Romanians and Italians are obese whereas more than 20% of people in the UK, Ireland and Malta are.
