For a majority of the time, nuclear power has been proven to be safe however it can severely negative effects on the environment.
Nuclear power plants produce large quantities of indisposable radioactive waste which must be stored underground and have half-lifes of thousands of years.
During catastrophic events such as the recent earthquake in Japan, the reactor could also release high level of radioactivity which could be harmful not only to humans to all living organisms in the surrounding areas.
