There are six subspecies of tigers (there used to be nine, but three are now extinct). The Bengal Tiger is the most numerous subspecies, and according to the WWF, there are 2,100 wild Bengal Tigers, of which 1,400 live in India.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, these are the totals for countries with wild tigers:

    • Bangladesh: 200-419
    • Bhutan: 67-81 (151-250 by a likely exaggerated estimate)
    • Cambodia: 11-50
    • China: 37-50
    • India: 1165-1657 (3,642 by a likely exaggerated estimate)
    • Indonesia: 441-679 (742-1009 by a likely exaggerated estimate)
    • Laos: 7-23
    • Malaysia: 300-493 (or 493-1480 by a likely exaggerated estimate)
    • Myanmar: 150
    • Nepal: 350-370
    • Russia: 331-393
    • Thailand: 250-720

    Looks like India’s the winner.
