The fact that the world’s largest meat exporter has committed to no longer purchasing cattle raised in the deforested Amazon is a big win. Cattle ranching is a lead cause of both deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions. There is currently a swath of former Amazon forest land the size of Iceland being used for cow pasture. One can only assume that consumer outrage over the practice has lead to JBS-Frisboi’s announcement.
There is also a lot of deforestation going on in South America and Brazil specifically because of the soybean industry. They are one of the biggest soy exporters in the world, and most of the soy is going to feeding livestock, not directly to consumers. To slow down deforestation, this issue would have to also be tackled.
