Is newspaper bad for my hampster?

It looks like he is eating it.

Possibly, it depends on the hamster. They might be allergic to the ink and have a bad reaction, it’s always a good idea to use the ink free, shredded paper available at pet stores. As always, when in doubt consult a pet expert, such as an employee at your local pet store.

Newspaper is readily available and cheap, but it should generally be avoided as bedding.  Hamsters use their teeth to tear up their bedding, and they can ingest some of the ink as they rip up the paper.  This may cause an allergic reaction or make the hamster sick.  Good alternatives to newspaper include aspen wood shavings or the shredded paper and wood pulp beddings available at many pet stores.
