Is New York’s wastewater really radioactive?

Yes. The wastewater created by drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale is over 250 times the safe limit for radiation. It contains radium 226. This presents a huge problem for how to treat the wastewater, as a normal treatment facility cannot deal with the radiation and it could present a health hazard to workers. Naturally occuring radioactive materials (NORM) are a common hazard wherever drilling for oil and gas occurs.
