Yes. The wastewater created by drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale is over 250 times the safe limit for radiation. It contains radium 226. This presents a huge problem for how to treat the wastewater, as a normal treatment facility cannot deal with the radiation and it could present a health hazard to workers. Naturally occuring radioactive materials (NORM) are a common hazard wherever drilling for oil and gas occurs.
