Starting any business, especially a power company, is a very complex process in the modern era. Due to government regulations, new power companies must prove that their facilities will be safe. In addition, they must choose an appropriate price for the power that they supply. This can be especially problematic if new legislation is enacted a year or two into the company’s operation. For example: if the country decided to impose a carbon tax and the power supplier is using fossil fuel, they may need to charge their customers more, and customers don’t like it when their energy prices suddenly increase. However, due to the fact that most power companies are monopolies within their regions, their customers may not have much choice in the matter.
